Apple released iOS 5.1 during their March keynote speech; a keynote where we also saw the 3rd generations of the iPad and AppleTV rolled out. As always, iTunes tends to get a little bit tempramental when it comes to grabbing firmware updates therefore you may well find it easier to download directly from Apple’s servers.
