It’s been a long time coming but you won’t see me complaining: The Chronic dev team have released their updated greenpois0n jailbreak tool which will allow you to jailbreak your iOS device. The iPhone dev team were still working on their own toolset when Chronic made their tool available for download. Followers of both group’s Twitter streams will have noticed drama unfolding towards the end of last year about who was capable of delivering a suitable toolset for the job. Chronic dev team pulled out all the stops and reached a stable release ahead of the iPhone dev team therefore any exploits the iPhone dev team have will now be saved for iOS 4.3. Enough banter, how do you use it? Let’s take a look:

greenpois0n (currently in release candidate 6 stage) can be downloaded from Chronic’s site here. The toolset works on Windows and Mac OS thus far (Linux is still in the works). It allows you jailbreak your iDevice in as an untethered device. In this example I’m going to assume you are jailbreaking an iPhone, for jailbreaking the AppleTV see here.

  1. Download greenpois0n
  2. Backup up your iPhone within iTunes
  3. Ensure your iPhone is running iOS 4.2.1*
  4. Close iTunes (if it’s open)
  5. Open greenpois0n
  6. Say “No” to the question asking if you’re about to jailbreak an AppleTV
  7. Click the “Jailbreak” button and follow the onscreen instructions

* Update to it if you aren’t already running it although if you rely on an old baseband to sim unlock then please use Pwnage Tool or TinyUmbrella to update without updating your baseband too)

The onscreen instructions for an iPhone 4 user will typically require you to have your iPhone connected to the computer but powered off. To achieve this connect the iPhone to an available USB port. Press and hold the power button (sleep button) of your iPhone until the “Slide to power off” screen appears. Slide your finger and that’s the device powered off. When you click the “Jailbreak” button on greenpois0n it’ll ask you to press and hold the power and home keys in a specific sequence in order to put the device into DFU mode. Don’t worry if you don’t get it first or even second time, it’s quite forgiving and you can’t damage your device attempting to put it into such a mode. Patience and preparation are key.

During the jailbreak process there wll be a lot of verbose text scrolling across your iPhone screen in tiny writing. Don’t panic – keep your hands off and just let it do it’s thing. Once the process is complete you’ll be notified on the iPhone screen. Once the greenpois0n element is complete you’ll need to install Cydia so you can get access to the wonderful apps and tweaks available within it’s store either for free or for your coin. To install Cydia simply tap the “Loader” icon on your iPhone springboard and choose Cydia.

Once Cydia’s done it’s thing on first load you’re all done and set to enjoy life as it should be with your iPhone. We’ve a guide highlighting some of our favourite Cydia apps you should check out here. Enjoy!
