Apple released iOS 5.1 during their March keynote speech; a keynote where we also saw the 3rd generations of the iPad and AppleTV rolled out. As always, iTunes tends to get a tempramental when it comes to grabbing firmware updates therefore you may well find it easier to download directly from Apple’s servers using the below links:

If you are already running iOS 5.x on your device then you should be able to enjoy using the OTA (Over The Air) updates. To make use of this browse to  Settings > General > Software Update  on your iOS device.

If you rely on a jailbreak then you are advised to stay away from this firmware for the time being.

Here’s the official change log:

– Japanese language support for Siri (availability may be limited during initial rollout)
– Photos can now be deleted from Photo Stream
– Camera shortcut now always visible on Lock Screen for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (4th generation)
– Camera face detection now highlights all detected faces
– Redesigned Camera app for iPad
– Genius Mixes and Genius playlists for iTunes Match subscribers
– Audio for TV programs and films on iPad optimized to sound louder and clearer
– Podcast controls for playback speed and a 30-second rewind for iPad
– Addresses bugs affecting battery life
– Fixes and issue that occasionally caused audio to drop for outgoing calls

Just a brief note for any American based DCMA lawyers – these are links directly to Apple and not a reproduction of the content on a different download server so please don’t waste your time or mine sending through DCMA notices. This site is UK based any way so US law has no relevance.
