The man behind the simple jailbreakme.com has released the latest version of his browser based tool. We’ve already written specifically about how to jailbreak the iPad 2 since that’s ground breaking. The great news is this jailbreak can be used on other iDevices too. The process is simple and thankfully untethered.
Supported devices and versions at the time of writing are:
- iPad 1: 4.3 to 4.3.3
- iPad 2: 4.3.3
- iPhone 3GS: 4.3 to 4.3.3
- iPhone 4: 4.3 to 4.3.3
- iPhone 4 CDMA: 4.2.6 to 4.2.8
- iPod touch 3g: 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
- iPod touch 4g: 4.3 to 4.3.3
As will any jailbreak it’s important to remember that you should take a back up of your device before you get started.
Ready? Let’s begin!
- Open Safari
- Browse to jailbreakme.com
You’ll see a screen that looks like this (on the iPad and a smaller version on an iPhone or iPod touch).
- Tap the FREE button on the left, it will change to Install
- Tap Install once (don’t tap it again even if there’s a delay)
The browser will close, a Cydia icon should appear with an installation progress bar.
Once installation is complete a pop up should appear informing you Cydia has loaded
That’s it! All that’s required has been done in the background on your device. It uses a PDF exploit in order to install – you should patch this following the instructions here. If you wish to remove the jailbreak at any point simply restore your device in iTunes.
Clear the cache in Safari. Close all apps that are backgrounding. Reboot your device. Ensure pop ups are allowed under Safari settings. Ensure your device is running a supported firmware.
