I’m getting ready to upgrade my iPhone 4 16Gb to the not-yet-not-announced-but-seemingly-leaked-everywhere sixth generation iPhone. I was surprised by this, but I had assumed (seemingly wrongly) that buying a phone outright would be cheaper than getting a contract with a mobile provider.
Apple’s WWDC keynote yesterday saw iOS 6 being unveiled to the world. There were a number of feature showcased as well as key improvements and changes to the portable operating system Apple’s iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches run.
FaceTime was touted as one of Apple’s big iOS features when they released the iPhone 4. There’s no doubt that it’s been hugely popular but we’re doubtful it’s as popular as Apple perhaps hoped it would be. Part of this may well be down to Apple preventing users from making / receiving FaceTime calls unless they were connected to a WiFi network. iOS 6 will change this and allow users to use the FaceTime service over their 3G or even 4G carrier service.
Most of the tech world expected that there would be no new iPhone released at this year’s WWDC keynote however there were a few of us who would have like to have seen Apple use their “one more thing” to shock the world with a new iPhone less than a year after rolling out the iPhone 4S. They didn’t, so the question on many people’s lips now is, “When can we expect the new iPhone?”
Google have provided Apple with their stock application Maps content on the iOS platform. The blogsphere has been awash with rumour for some time that Apple were either looking to develop their own in-house solution or partner with a new provider. The wraps are finally off of the new iOS 6 beta, and as demonstrated at WWDC 2012, we now know that Apple’s new iOS mapping is essential TomTom provided but reskinned to Apple’s requirements.
A recent nugget of delight comes in the form of FacebookThis. Quite simply, once install, it adds the ability to send a photo straight to Facebook from your camera roll. It’s free and available to download from the BigBoss repo, which is, by default, installed on all jailbroken iDevices.
We’ve already shown how you can jailbreak your iOS 5.1.1 device using Absinthe 2.0 however there are other tools out there to achieve the same thing. Today we’re going to take a look at Sn0wBreeze, a Windows only jailbreaking application.
There are loads of top lists you can thumb through for things you can install upon your jailbroken phone but most of them are invariably made up of some pretty huge applications which fundamentally change the structure of your devices. We felt it was high time someone wrote about some of the smaller and perhaps simpler apps that can make a big difference to your device without fundamentally changing it whilst including a few firm favourites.
I decided to take a holiday to France with my family and the day we left I was browsing Twitter in the ferry terminal when, to my delight, I saw a tweet by @pod2g saying he’d finally managed to get the untethered iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak completed. Not long after Absinthe 2.0 became available to download. This is fabulous news and the toolset has already been used in excess of a million times to jailbreak the various iOS devices. Permission is granted for you to carry out a little happy dance before sitting down and carrying out the merry business of carrying out an untethered jailbreak of your cherished device using the Absinthe tool on Mac / Windows or Linux.
Apple released iOS 5.1.1 on the 7th May. As always, iTunes tends to get a tempramental when it comes to grabbing firmware updates therefore you may well find it easier to download directly from Apple’s servers using the listed links.
